Izzy’s dream

Squid blogged this morning about her 7 year old daughter’s MLK Jr. Day essay for school: I have a dream….

Don’t miss it.

I cried last night, I cried again this morning, and I’m crying again now, it was so touching. It’s not like anyone prompted her to do this… Go look at it!

I thought of how I grew up, and of my teenage and adult life as a person who was out in the face of a lot of hostility… What a difference it would have made to me if I had grown up around kids who think like Iz, instead. It’s things like this that give me hope right now.

I am aware of the arguments against queers taking up marriage as a thing to fight for… and yet the fact that it’s an issue in the mind of a 2nd grader, and one she sees as a basic question of justice, I think even a person who is anti-fight-for-marriage would see this as beautiful progress and a sign of hope for the future.
